Good evening ,Ladies and Gentlemen:
晚上好,女士们,先生们:

Thank you very much for
choosing to come in such a cold night.
Today my topic is about
choice and
process.
A research shows that a man has to
make 73 choices one day.
With so many choices one day
,
people easily get so confused and afraid of making wrong choice that they hesitate and finally miss the
true part of life. In my opinion, the following part is of much more importance than the choice. There is no
absolute right or wrong choice but wonderful or boring life, which the process makes the difference.

Life is a box of chocolate
,you never know what you will get. Forrest Gump made no decision by and
for himself but he accomplished great success with his strong will in the process. The process is not the
road itself but the attitudes and feelings ,the caution, courage and persistance we have as we encounter
new experience and unexpected obstacles. Take myself as an example, I changed my major when I
became a postgraduate. After the choice, days have been harsh for me.I cannot understand the new
lessons at all. For they are closely related to mathmatics which I learned nothing about before. H

persisted. I asked for help from every channel and reorgonized my life. Gradually I could understand
some parts and even found maths interesting. Moreover, I learned to act instead of complaining. In
retrospect, the choice left no trace in my mind but the happiness and bitterness of the past four months
becomes an unforgetable experience in my life.

Ideal Society

Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen:

I’d like to start with a group of pictures.

"Modern and advanced"? This society forgets, and ignores the other two thirds of human beings. It's far
from the ideal! We call ideal as a utopian, a place where reality does not exist. A few people still look
forward to the ideals. We make fun of them, considering they are naive. Will we still be
content to live in
such a society, if misfortune drops to us? No! Of cause not!
When we feel the warmth of the sun, these people, endure great sorrows and pains. Can we imagine that?
They are our brother and sisters!
Facing them, will we still complain about our own misfortune?
Facing them, will we still have the mood shouting for our own freedom?
Facing them, will we still want to have more and more unnecessary stuff?
They are unable to meet their needs, even the basic needs of survival! Everyone, as a member of
humanity, shouldn't feel ashamed? Our luxury deprived their lives, our indifference violated our soul, and
our barbarity destroyed human civilization!
What's the ideal society? It's a society no one worries about their living, a society no one is refused from
education, a society everyone can pursue his/her own happiness! The ideal society is filled with love, joy
and kindness. In that society, we can touch the other's hearts, we can share our dreams and most
important, we can just be the true men!
Let's break the ethnic divide, bridge the gap between rich and poor, hand in hand, to build a Great wall,
protecting us from evil; to construct a steady bridge, connecting reality to the ideal society! Let's pursue
for that, that's the only way to the bright future!
They are watching us!
Thank you!

Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease, says the World
Health Organisation.

According to their figures, it is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide
every year.

Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 diseases, and even
the WHO says that its impact on world health is not fully assessed.

Heart attack and stroke

UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s are five times more likely to have a
heart attack than non-smokers.

Tobacco contributes to the hardening of the arteries, which can then become blocked and
starve the heart of bloodflow, causing the attack.

Often, smokers who develop this will require complex and risky heart bypass surgery.

If you smoke for a lifetime, there is a 50% chance that your eventual death will be
smoking-related - half of all these deaths will be in middle age.

Smoking also increases the risk of having a stroke.

Lung problems

Another primary health risk associated with smoking are lung cancer, which kills more
than 20,000 people in the UK every year.

US studies have shown that men who smoke increase their chances of dying from the
disease by more than 22 times.

Women who smoke increase this risk by nearly 12 times.

Lung cancer is a difficult cancer to treat - long term survival rates are poor.

Smoking also increases the risk of oral, uterine, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, and
cervical cancers, and leukaemia.

Another health problem associated with tobacco is emphysema, which, when combined
with chronic bronchitis, produces chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

- 4 -
The lung damage which causes emphysema is irreversible, and makes it extremely
difficult to breathe.

Harm to children

Smoking in pregnancy greatly increases the risk of miscarriage, is associated with lower
birthweight babies, and inhibited child development.

Smoking by parents following the birth is linked to sudden infant death syndrome, or cot
death, and higher rates of infant respiratory illness, such as bronchitis, colds, and
pneumonia.

Nicotine, an ingredient of tobacco, is listed as an addictive substance by the US
authorities.

Although the health risks of smoking are culmulative, giving up can yield health benefits
regardless of the age of the patient, or the length of time they have been smoking.

Future impact

By 2020, the WHO expects the worldwide death toll to reach 10 million, causing 17.7% of
all deaths in developed countries.

There are believed to be 1.1 billion smokers in the world, 800 million of them in developing
countries.

Me and my Fears

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.

While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.”

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

  Thank you.

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, "Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience."

How right they were. Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, "I can do it!" when others shout, "No, you can't."

It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn't let up on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant's delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle.

It is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age.

At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. Music, for Casals, was an elixir that made life a never ending adventure. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, "Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."

How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer, I believe, lies in the word itself. "Enthusiasm" comes from the Greek and means "God within." And what is God within is but an abiding sense of love -- proper love of self (self-acceptance) and, from that, love of others.

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a part-time avocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons, the executive who handcrafts furniture.

Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended bouts of depression that had plagued her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, "I am tempted to call Layton a genius." Elizabeth has rediscovered her enthusiasm.

We can't afford to waste tears on "might-have-beens." We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after "what-can-be."

We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses -- finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smooths the wrinkles from our souls.

Our own planet,Earth,is becoming more and more crowded and polluted.Hopefully,we can start again and build a better world on Mars.First of all, transport should be much better. In a very short time, space shuttles will travel at half speed of light.Humans meed food, water and air to survive.Scientists hope to plants that can grow on Mars. These plants will produce the food and oxygen that we need. However,it is not certain if these plants will be able to produce water .The gravity on Mars is only about three-eights of the gravity on Earth.Humans on Mars would have to wear special boots to make themselves heavir.
