A long time ago, a child was born to a queen and king and she was called Snow White. When the queen died, the king married again. This new queen was wicked and hated Snow white. The queen gave orders that Snow White was to be treated as a servant.
Snow White grew very beautiful and one day a Prince riding by, saw her at work and fell in love with her.
The queen was beautiful too, and every day she asked her Magic Mirror, "Who is the fairest in the land?" and the mirror always answered, "You are the fairest one of all".
But one day the mirror answered Snow White was the fairest in the land, and in a rage the queen gave orders to one of her Huntsmen to take Snow White into the woods and kill her.
The Huntsman had a kind heart and couldn't do the deed so told her to run away. She fled into the woods where Seven little dwarfs lived. Their house was small and strange.
Snow White entered the little house and finding it very untidy, started to clean up. Upstairs she found seven little beds. She was very tired and stretching out on one of the beds, was soon asleep.
When the Dwarfs came home they were surprised to find Snow White and after some argument, decided to let her stay. She promised to cook and look after them.
The Queen discovered where Snow White was living and disguising herself as a witch, took a poisoned apple and set out for the Dwarfs cottage. She gave Snow White the poisoned apple to eat and as soon as she bit the apple, she sank into unconsciousness.
Thinking she was dead, the Dwarfs built a glass coffin and put her in it. For days she lay in the forest in her glass coffin. One day, the Prince was riding through the forest looking for Snow White and found her. He leaned over and kissed her. She opened her eyes and sat up with a smile. Everyone was happy. The Prince took Snow White to his palace where they were married and lived happily ever after.

刘易斯•卡罗尔的真名叫查尔斯•勒特威奇•道奇森（1832～1898），是一位数学家，长期在享有盛名的牛津大学任基督堂学院数学讲师，发表了好几本数学著作。他因有严重的口吃，故而不善与人交往，但他兴趣广泛，对小说、诗歌、逻辑都颇有造诣，还是一个优秀的儿童像摄影师。卡罗尔后来又写了一部姐妹篇，叫《爱丽丝镜中奇遇记》，并与《爱丽丝漫游奇境记》一起风行于世。
《宝岛》又名《金银岛》是斯蒂文森为他妻子的前夫之子写的少年读物，出版后受到了各年龄段读者的喜爱，成为他流传最广的一部小说。这部作品有着鲜明的惊险色彩，为人们揭开了冒险者世界的一角。故事是由男孩吉姆讲述的，他参与探险，去寻找埋藏在一个遥远的海岛上的财宝。机警而大胆的吉姆发现了海盗们的阴谋，海盗们打算从这次浪漫航行的组织者手里把宝物夺走。经过了无数次惊险的遭遇，勇敢的旅行者们到达了荒岛，在岛上找到了一个曾经当过海盗的人，并且在他的帮助下掘出了财宝。
罗伯特•路易斯•斯蒂文森（1850-1894）是英国小说家，苏格兰人，出生在爱丁堡。斯蒂文森1867年在爱丁堡大学先攻读土木工程，不久改学法律，1875年成为一名开业律师。不过他在大学期间就开始给杂志撰稿，1878年他出版了游记《内河航行》，次年又出版了《驴背旅程》。1879年他到加尼福尼亚，第二年在那里与奥斯本夫人结婚。尽管体弱多病，他却从未中断写作。他为各种杂志写了大量散文、小说、游记和自传等，他还从事诗歌和戏剧创作。出版的小说有《新天方夜谭》（1882）、《宝岛》（1883）、《化身博士》（1886）、《绑架》（1886）《快乐的人们》（1887）等等。1888年因为健康原因，斯蒂文森同夫人前往太平洋上的萨摩亚岛，1894年在该岛上去世。

奥斯卡•王尔德（1850～1900），出生于爱尔兰的都柏林市一个著名的牙科医生家里。他从小时候起，就读书用功，成绩优异，曾在英国牛津大学攻读古希腊的经典著作，并开始了文学创作活动。早在他的童话为世人所知之前，年仅二十四岁，他的诗作就荣获大奖；在他短短的创作生涯中（享年四十六岁），行文演论，无处不是智趣横生。1876年，他到意大利和希腊旅行，进一步接触欧洲的古代文化。后来他迁居伦敦，经常接触当时英国文艺界名流，发表自己对文学的见解和观点，对他后来的文学活动一很大影响。然而他事业的起飞，风格的形成，可以说都源于童话，也正是他的第一部童话集问世之后，人们才真正将他视为有影响的作家。英国《典雅》杂志将他和安徒生相提并论，说他的，《自私的巨人》堪称“完美之作”，整本童话集更是纯正英语的结晶。1888年5月，他的第一部童话集《快乐王子及其它》（包括《快乐王子》、《夜莺和玫瑰》、《自私的巨人》、《忠诚的朋友》和《神奇的火箭》）出版了。这本书立刻轰动一时，书的作者也成了人们注目的中心。1891年12月，他的另一部童话集问世——《石榴之屋》，收有四部童话：《少年国王》、《小公主的生日》、《渔夫和他的灵魂》和《星孩》。这部书并未像王尔德的第一本童话那样立即大受欢迎。而是渐渐地，特别是在王尔德死后，才成为家喻户晓的故事集。 1895年，王尔德因诽谤罪而入狱，被监禁两年。出狱后，他迁居法国，郁郁不得志，最后病死在巴黎的一家小客栈里。他的早年逝世，是世界文坛上的憾事。
《柳林风声》描写癞蛤蟆大少爷靠祖传家产过活，挥霍浪费，追求新奇玩意儿，最后上当受骗，差点儿连家也保不住，幸亏他的朋友们帮他夺了回来。因为作者对动物的生态十分熟悉，因此童话中的鼹鼠、河鼠、癞蛤蟆等等角色写得既是“人”又是“动物”，河鼠的善良、助人为乐；鼹鼠的温顺憨厚；獾的慈祥和蔼以及癞蛤蟆的鲁莽、愚蠢却又坦率、慷慨，都在作品中表现得淋漓尽致。
肯尼斯•格雷厄姆（Kenneth Grahame，1859～1932）生于英国苏格兰的爱丁堡，他的童年很不幸，5岁丧母，随后丧父，几兄弟都由亲戚收养。中学毕业后，他没有钱继续读大学，20岁进英格兰银行工作，直到1908年，因在银行里被一疯汉用枪击伤而退休。他喜欢自然和文学，业余研究动物和写作，很早就是一位很有名气的作家。在他的独生儿子AIastair六岁时，他为儿子编讲故事，儿子听得入了迷，暑假也不肯到外地去过，他只好答应用写信的方式把故事继续写给他看。1907年他写给儿子的一扎信，就是这部《柳林风声》的基础。
格雷厄姆的这本书，曾经引起当时美国总统罗斯福的注意，他曾写信告诉作者，他把《柳林风声》一口气读了3遍。格雷厄姆酷爱大自然，在他的笔下，对自然的描写及其流畅、丰富。《柳林风声》在1908年出版，被誉为英国散文体作品的典范。1920年AIastalr死了。1932年,肯尼斯•格雷厄姆去世。除《柳林风声》外，他还留下两本书：《黄金时代》（The Golden Age，1895）和《做梦的日子》（Dream Days，1898），深为英美不同年龄的人喜爱。

《彼得•潘》是巴里最著名的一部童话剧。巴里迁居伦敦后，住在肯辛顿公园附近，每天上下班都见一群孩子在草地上玩耍。他们用树枝盖小屋，用泥土做点心，扮演童话中的种种角色。巴里被他们的游戏吸引，也加入到其中。这些孩子一个个都成了这位作家故事中的人物，那个最活跃的男孩彼得，便化作了他童话的主人公。
《彼得•潘》1904年12月27日在伦敦公演后，引起巨大轰动。从此，每年这一天都在伦敦上演此剧。后来，巴里把它改写成童话故事，从此，《彼得•潘》被译成多种文字传到国外。以彼得•潘的故事为内容的图画故事、纪念册、版画、邮票风行欧美各国，每年圣诞节，西方许多国家都在电视上播放这个节目，作为献给孩子们的礼物。
《彼得兔的故事》是一本图文并茂的幼儿读物，主人公彼得是作者儿时的一只宠物兔子，在作者的笔下，他成为一个单纯可爱，又有些调皮的童话形象，在这些富有生活情趣的故事里，还有许多可爱的动物：淘气又胆小怕事的彼得兔、冒失的本杰明兔子、尖酸贪婪的小老鼠塞缪尔.胡子、不喑世事又挺有主张的杰米玛鸭子、大智若愚，心胸开阔的平小猪……他们住在一个美丽的山村，永远不会老。
毕翠克丝•波特（Beatrix Potter，1866～1943）生于伦敦一个富有的家庭，在世的时候发表了21个故事和两个幼儿歌谣集，都是单独发表，独立成书的。第一个是《彼得兔的故事》，发表于1902年。毕翠克丝•波特创作故事的时候总是同时创作插图，每个故事都有几十幅精美生动的插图紧密配合故事情节。1903年之后，她一直在风景秀丽的湖区（Lake District）山顶农场（Hill Top Farm）居住，毕翠克丝的农场生活在她后期的故事里可以说是无处不在，《生姜和酸菜》里的零售业兴衰就是索瑞村里的小店，而《馅饼与小肉饼盘子》里的猫狗茶会写的就是可爱又可笑的乡村社交，《夹心布丁卷》里猖狂得敢收拾小猫的老鼠夫妇就住在毕翠克丝买下的老房子里！
《国王的女儿哭着要月亮》讲述某天晚上国王的女儿爬上最高的烟囱要月亮，误以为女儿失踪的国王听信保姆的话，导致一连串的罢工，与此同时，因为国王的女儿索要月亮而没有得到应允，使得动物们决定打倒“黑夜”和“白昼”。四月一日，被谣传激怒的全世界所有的国王都派军队向这里进攻，黑夜与白昼都翻了个，此时国王的女儿看到了月亮漆黑的一面，于是回到了王宫，一切又复归于正常，过去的一切很快被世界所忘记。
