The Three Gorges Dam project is one of the most controversial international river issues. The dam would cross the Yangtze River, which is a the third largest river in the world, at a point where the river is a mile wide. The 610 foot dam would create a 39 billion cubic meter reservoir that would stretch for 400 miles. 3 Not only is this the largest dam ever built, it is the largest construction undertaking. Financial backing has come from many national and international sources, including United States companies. China has also sought outside engineering and construction consulting from companies including Caterpillar Construction Company.
A dam on the Yangtze River was first proposed by Sun Yatsen in 1919 for power generation purposes. This prosoal never came about because of economic and political strife. Many leaders dreamed of taming the Yangtze River. Life along the Yangtze River can be treacherous because of the deadly flooding known to devastate cities and lives.
Advantages:1、e799bee5baa6e78988e69d83361The great amount of water generates huge flow of hydro power.
2、The conservatory formed by the dam facilitates the fishing industry.
3、The dam also provides a best resort for tourism.
4、Serious floods in the lower part of Yangtze River would be regulated. 5、The dam helps clean the pile of sands in river beds in the lower part of the River.
Disadvantages:
1、The dam may be a potential target for foreign military attack.
2、It changes the climate in the upper part of Yangtze River.
3、Ecological conditions in the Yangtze River is greatly changed and many species become hard to survive.
4、Many tourist attractions are buried by the rise of water level.
5、Potential climate changes may cause other weather calamities and geological disasters.
Three Gorges Dam国家地理有一期介绍三峡的
The Three Gorges Dam (Chinese: 长江三峡大坝) is a hydroelectric river dam that spans the Yangtze River in the town of Sandouping, located in the Yiling District of Yichang, in Hubei province, China. It is the world's largest electricity-generating plant of any kind. The dam body was completed in 2006. Except for a ship lift, all of the originally planned components of the project were completed on October 30, 2008 when the 26th generator was brought into commercial operation. Currently, it contains 26 completed generators in the shore power plant, each with a capacity of 700 MW. Six additional generators in the underground power plant are being installed and are not expected to become fully operational until around 2011. Coupling the dam's 32 main generators with 2 smaller generators (50 MW each) to power the plant itself, the total electric generating capacity of the dam will eventually reach 22,500 MW. The project produces hydroelectricity, increases the river's navigation capacity, and reduces the potential for floods downstream by providing flood storage space. From completion until September 2009 the dam has generated 348.4 TWh of electricity, covering more than one third of its project cost. The project management and the Chinese state regard the project as an historic engineering, social and economic success, with the design of state of the art large turbines, and a move toward the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. However, the dam has also flooded archaeological and cultural sites and displaced some 1.3 million people, and is causing significant ecological changes, including an increased risk of landslides. The building of the dam has been a controversial topic both in China and abroad.希望e799bee5baa6e79fa5e98193e78988e69d83331帮到你啦~
